Introduction: Bangladesh is a blessed child of nature. Nature has enriched her with many kinds of gifts and assets. River is one of those. Hundreds of small and big rivers are criss-crossed in the whole country. So Bangladesh is called a riverine country.
Main rivers: There are many rivers in Bangladesh. Some are big and some are small. The Padma, the meghna, the jamuna, the Burigonga, the Brahmoputro, the Shitolokkhy, the Karnofuli, the Tista, the Surma etc. are the main rivers of Bangladesh. Maximum rivers have risen from the Himalays and fallen into the Bay of Bengal. The longest river is the Surma and the biggest river is the Jamuna.

Role of river in economy: The rivers play very important role in our national economy. Bangladesh is an agricultural country. The irrigation of agriculture is largely dependent on this rivers. Besides, the rivers carry plenty of sit and make the soil fertile. As a result, the farmers get good harvest. The rivers also help our trade and commerce by offering easy and cheap communication system.
Source of wealth: Our rivers are a great source of wealth. They give us a lot of fishes. Moreover, many people earn their livelihood by catching fish in the rivers.
Source of energy: The current of the rivers is a great source of energy. We can utilize it in various ways. In Kaptai and Goalpara, we are producing electricity by utilizing river current.
Source of pleasure and recreation: Our rivers are a great source of pleasure and recreation. The rivers attract all of us. A journey by boat in the river way is very thrilling and enjoyable. A good number of songs have been composed from love for rivers. Besides, the rivers create very attractive and charming scenes.
Bad sides: The rivers have some bad sides too. Sometimes, they cause dreadful floods. These floods destroy huge property and make the affected people’s life miserable and lamentable.
Conclusion: Despite some bad sides, the rivers are a great blessing for Bangladesh. But many of our rivers are being destroyed or losing their beauty. So, sincere steps should be taken to protect our rivers.

ভূমিকা: বাংলাদেশ প্রকৃতির আশীর্বাদপুষ্ট শিশু। প্রকৃতি তাকে সমৃদ্ধ করেছে নানারকম উপহার ও সম্পদে। নদী সেগুলোর মধ্যে একটি। শত শত ছোট-বড় নদী জালের মত জড়িয়ে আছে গোটা বাংলাদেশে। তাই বাংলাদেশকে বলা হয় একটি নদীমাতৃক দেশ।
প্রধান প্রধান নদী: অনেক নদী আছে বাংলাদেশে। কতকগুলো বড় এবং কতকগুলো ছোট। পদ্মা, মেঘনা, যমুনা, বুড়িগঙ্গা, ব্রক্ষপুত্র, শীতলক্ষা, কর্ণফুলি, তিস্তা, সুরমা, ইত্যাদি বাংলাদেশের প্রধান প্রধান নদী। বেশিরভাগ নদী উৎপত্তি লাভ করেছে হিমালয় হতে এবং পতিত হয়েছে বঙ্গোপসাগরে। সবচেয়ে দীর্ঘ নদী সুরমা এবং সবচেয়ে বড় নদী যমুনা।
অর্থনীতিতে নদীর ভূমিকা: নদীগুলো পালন করে অতি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা আমাদের জাতীয় অর্থনীতিতে। বাংলাদেশ একটি কৃষিপ্রধান দেশ। কৃষিকাজের পারিসেচ বহুলাংশে নির্ভরশীল এই নদীগুলোর ওপর। তাছাড়া, নদীগুলো বয়ে আনে প্রচুর পরিমাণ পলি এবং মাটিকে উর্বর করে। ফলে, কৃষকেরা পায় উচ্চ ফলন। নদীগুলো আরও সাহায্য করে আমাদের ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্যকে প্রদানের মাধ্যমে সহজ ও সস্তা যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থা।
সম্পদের উৎস: আমাদের নদীগুলো সম্পদের এক বিরাট উৎস। তারা আমাদের দেয় প্রচুর পরিমাল মাছ। তাছাড়া, অনেক লোক উপার্জন করে তাদের জীবিকা মাছ ধারার মাধ্যমে নদীগুলোতে।
শক্তির উৎস: নদীগুলোর স্রোত হয় শক্তির একটি বিরাট উৎস। আমরা এটাকে কাজে লাগাতে পারি বিভিন্নভাবে। কাপ্তাই ও গোয়ালপাড়াতে আমরা বিদ্যুৎ উৎপন্ন করছি কাজে লাগানোর মাধ্যমে নদীর স্রোতকে।

আনন্দ ও বিনোদনের উৎস: আমাদের নদীগুলো একটি বিরাট উৎস আমাদের আনন্দ ও বিনোদনের। নদীগুলো আকর্ষণ করে আমাদের সবাইকে। নদীপথে নৌকা ভ্রমণ অত্যন্ত রোমাঞ্চকর এবং উপভোগ্য। অনেক গান রচিত হয়েছে নদীর প্রতি ভালোবাসা থেকে। তাছাড়া, নদীগুলো সৃষ্টি করে অত্যন্ত আকর্ষণীয় ও মনোরম দৃশ্য।
খারাপ দিক: নদীগুলোর আছে কিছু খারাপ দিকও। মাঝে মাঝে তারা ঘটায় ভয়াবহ বন্যা। এই বন্যা ধ্বংস করে ব্যাপক সম্পদ এবং আক্রান্ত লোকদের জীবনকে করে দুর্দশাপূর্ণ ও শোকার্ত।
উপসংহার: কিছু খারাপ দিক সত্ত্বেও, নদীগুলো একটি বিরাট আশীবার্দ বাংলাদেশের জন্য। কিন্তু আমাদের অনেক নদী ধ্বংস হচ্ছে বা তাদের সৌন্দর্য হারাচ্ছে। তাই আন্তরিক পদক্ষেপসমূহ গ্রহণ করা উচিত রক্ষা করার জন্য আমাদের নদীগুলোকে।
