Introduction: Generally, population is a great blessing for a country. But it becomes a dreadful problem or curse when a country cannot meet her citizen’s basic rights. Such a situation is prevailing in Bangladesh.
Causes: The population of Bangladesh is too much in proportion to her area. Her growth rate of population is very high. Illiteracy, unawareness, extreme poverty, early marriage, superstition etc. Are mainly responsible behind this high rate. On the other hand, most of the people ae not skilled or trained. Besides, the govt, has not also tried sincerely to turn this huge population into manpower. For these reasons, our population has become a dreadful curse.
The demerits of over population: Over population is affecting every side of our family, society and country. Bangladesh is a small country. The country is facing difficult problems to meet the basic rights for her huge inhabitants. Bangladesh is an agricultural country. But the country is losing plenty of cultivable land to meet the housing problem. Moreover, education, treatment, electricity etc, important sectors are very weak and unplanned. Because, in every sector, the facilities are very less than the demand. The main reason of it is over population. Population explosion is also responsible behind unemployment, terrorism, social unrest, environment pollution, corruption etc.
Solution: This dreadful situation can’t be allowed to continue. The growth rate of population must be reduced. For this, people have to be made educated, conscious and superstition-free. Beside this, family planning programme has to be strengthened. Early marriage has to be banned. On the other hand, people have to be made skilled and trained.
Conclusion: Population problem is a great threat to our peaceful life and national development. So this problem must be solved. For this, we all have to be conscious, sincere and rational.

কারণসমূহ: বাংলাদেশের জনসংখ্যা তার আয়তনের অনুপাতে অনেক বেশি। তার জনসংখ্যা বৃদ্ধির হার অনেক বেশি। নিরক্ষরতা, অসচেতনতা, চরম দারিদ্র্য, বাল্যবিবাহ, কুসংস্কার ইত্যাদি এই উচ্চ হারের পেছনে প্রধানত দায়ী। অন্যদিকে, বেশিরভাগ মানুষই দক্ষ বা প্রশিক্ষিত নয়। এছাড়া এই বিপুল জনসংখ্যাকে জনশক্তিতে পরিণত করার জন্য সরকারও আন্তরিকভাবে চেষ্টা করেনি। এসব কারণে আমাদের জনসংখ্যা এক ভয়াবহ অভিশাপে পরিণত হয়েছে।
অতিরিক্ত জনসংখ্যার দোষ: অতিরিক্ত জনসংখ্যা আমাদের পরিবার, সমাজ ও দেশের প্রতিটি অংশকে প্রভাবিত করছে। বাংলাদেশ একটি ছোট দেশ। দেশটি তার বিশাল বাসিন্দাদের মৌলিক অধিকার পূরণে কঠিন সমস্যার সম্মুখীন হচ্ছে। বাংলাদেশ একটি কৃষিপ্রধান দেশ। কিন্তু আবাসন সমস্যা মেটাতে দেশ হারাচ্ছে প্রচুর আবাদি জমি। তাছাড়া শিক্ষা, চিকিৎসা, বিদ্যুৎ ইত্যাদি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ খাতগুলো খুবই দুর্বল ও অপরিকল্পিত। কারণ, প্রতিটি সেক্টরেই চাহিদার তুলনায় সুযোগ-সুবিধা খুবই কম। এর প্রধান কারণ অতিরিক্ত জনসংখ্যা। বেকারত্ব, সন্ত্রাস, সামাজিক অস্থিরতা, পরিবেশ দূষণ, দুর্নীতি ইত্যাদির পেছনেও জনসংখ্যা বিস্ফোরণ দায়ী।
সমাধান: এই ভয়াবহ পরিস্থিতি চলতে দেওয়া যায় না। জনসংখ্যা বৃদ্ধির হার কমাতে হবে। এ জন্য জনগণকে শিক্ষিত, সচেতন ও কুসংস্কারমুক্ত করতে হবে। এর পাশাপাশি পরিবার পরিকল্পনা কার্যক্রম জোরদার করতে হবে। বাল্যবিবাহ নিষিদ্ধ করতে হবে। অন্যদিকে জনগণকে দক্ষ ও প্রশিক্ষিত করে গড়ে তুলতে হবে।
উপসংহার: জনসংখ্যা সমস্যা আমাদের শান্তিপূর্ণ জীবন ও জাতীয় উন্নয়নের জন্য একটি বড় হুমকি। তাই এই সমস্যার সমাধান করতে হবে। এ জন্য আমাদের সবাইকে সচেতন, আন্তরিক ও যুক্তিবাদী হতে হবে।
